Boys & Girls Club Renovation and addition to start in 2010!

Boys & Girls Club of Greeneville & Greene County Building Project

The renovation and addition project for the Boys & Girls Club of Greeneville & Greene County was approved for final reading on June 9, 2009 at the planning commission.  The organizationhas also passed the final approval from the state fire marshal and if all goes as planned, we are set to start construction spring of 2010.  Construction is expected to take 8-10 months for completion.  Complete renovation of the existing facility that will include adding central heat and air, a sprinkler system, new windows and doors along with new plumbing and electrical wiring throughout the entire building.  Some walls will be taken down to make existing rooms bigger and some rooms will be converted into new uses.  One example is the current gym becoming a game room on one side and a cafeteria on the other side.  The addition will include 10 new program area rooms, new office and storage space along with additional new bathroom areas throughout the building.  The organization will also build a new full size gymnasium with 6 drop down goals and bleachers for spectators.  This renovation will allow the Boys & Girls Club to more than double the amount of children that they can serve each day and allow the club to serve them more efficiently. This past year the club had 424 registered club members and served 1,903 children throughout the community with their school outreach programs, jr. sports events and community wide programs.   The project will take the existing facility that is approximately 10,000 sq ft and increase it to approximately 24,000 sq ft.  The Boys & Girls Club has announced that they will have an open house soon for tours of the current facility and to have plans available showing the changes that will take place to the facility for review for the general public.

More information on the club’s building project will be forthcoming in a release from the club later this spring.

Preliminary plans for expansion of the Boys & Girls Club of Greeneville & Greene County facility were approved Tuesday, April 14, 2009 by the Greeneville Regional Planning Commission.  The Boys & Girls Club project will include partial demolition and new construction to more than double the size of the existing facility built in the late 1960s on West Church Street, according to Scott Bullington, executive director.  A groundbreaking ceremony is tentatively set for June, Bullington said.  The expansion will replace previous plans to build a new facility on property that had been provided by Holston United Methodist Home for Children.  A lease agreement for an 18-acre site near Holston Home at an annual cost of $1 was proposed in January 2007 by representatives of Holston Home and the Boys & Girls Club.  Bullington said Wednesday afternoon that previous plans for a new facility near Holston Home were abandoned because of the struggling economy and the likelihood that a sizable capital campaign would not be successful at this time.  Plans to fund the new project include grant applications and private donations, Bullington said.  The new plans include demolition of approximately 3,000 square feet of the existing facility and the addition of about 14,500 square feet, bringing the entire facility to 24,500 square feet, Bullington said.  The existing facility is about 10,000 square feet in size, he said.  The part to be demolished includes the mechanical room, kitchen, game room, bathrooms and storage, Bullington said.  This area will be replaced when the new addition is built behind the existing building, Bullington said.  The new addition will include a kitchen double the size of  the existing kitchen and a new gymnasium with six drop-down basketball goals, Bullington said.  The existing gymnasium will be split by a new wall, with one side becoming a new game room and the other side becoming a cafeteria, Bullington said.  Also, the entire existing facility will be modernized, Bullington added.  Further details will be announced prior to the groundbreaking, Bullington said.  He noted that if construction starts in the summer, the club will need an alternate site, which has not been determined.  Presenting the concept plans to the commission was Jerry Fortner, a member of the club's board of directors.  In addition to the concept approval granted Tuesday, the architect, Hodge Associates, based in Knoxville, must present a site plan for preliminary and final approval by the planning commission.  Contracting bids have not been accepted, Bullington said.
ZONING ACTION - When the commission adjourned, it reconvened as the Greeneville Board of Zoning Appeals and approved two variances for the Boys & Girls Club project.  Building Official Jim Snyder said the variance requests are from 10 feet to zero feet at the side and from 25 feet to 10 feet at the rear.  Fortner said the variances are needed to build a regulation-size gymnasium.  He said both adjoining property owners have given consent for the variances.
