Boys & Girls Clubs of America Alumni
A True Measure of Success

Bill Cosby... Michael Jordan... Brad Pitt... President Clinton... Jackie Joyner-Kersee... Martin Sheen... Neil Diamond... Denzel Washington.

What do all of these people, and millions more throughout America, have in common? They are all alumni of Boys & Girls Clubs.

While many Club alumni have achieved particular distinction in fields such as entertainment, business, politics and sports, the average alumnus is not famous. Most have achieved success by getting an education, raising a family, serving their country, pursuing a career or supporting the community.

Millions have benefited from belonging to a Boys & Girls Club since the first Club opened its doors in 1860. Based on research by Louis Harris & Associates, Club alumni have very strong feelings about their individual Club experiences:

  • 80% said Club staff helped them learn right from wrong
  • 95% indicated the Club was the best thing available in their community
  • 52% said participating in the Club "saved my life"
Visit our club and see why we're "The Positive Place For Kids."

Boys & Girls Clubs of America's mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. With this in mind, in communities large and small, caring Club staff are there for kids to help with homework, to give them new opportunities through stimulating academic programs and to open doors for youthful aspirations.

In fact, Academy-Award winning actor Denzel Washington, retired Army General Wesley Clark and many others attribute much of their success as an adult to the lessons learned as a member of their Boys & Girls Club. People from all walks of life feel the same way. Visit www.BeGreatAmerica.org to learn what many are saying about their Club experiences and, if you are a former Club kid, add your name to our Wall of Greatness!

Boys & Girls Club alumni are shining examples of how Clubs help shape young people and assist them in achieving their dreams. Every child has the potential to BE GREAT and we can all play a part in supporting them as they reach for success.

Donors can support Clubs in creating a safe and positive environment where children can learn and grow. Club alumni can connect with their hometown Club and volunteer. Community leaders can advocate for kids.

Support the Boys & Girls Club of Greeneville & Greene County and send the message that all young people can BE GREAT!

BGCA's History

Boys & Girls Clubs of America had its beginnings in 1860 with several women in Hartford, Conn. Believing that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative, they organized the first Club. A cause was born.

In 1906, several Boys Clubs decided to affiliate. The Federated Boys Clubs in Boston was formed with 53 member organizations – this marked the start of a nationwide Movement.

In 1931, the Boys Club Federation of America became Boys Clubs of America.

In 1956, Boys Clubs of America celebrated its 50th anniversary
and received a U.S. Congressional Charter.

To recognize the fact that girls are a part of our cause, the national organization's name was changed to Boys & Girls Clubs of America in 1990. Accordingly, Congress amended and renewed our charter.

2006 marked the Centennial year of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, as we celebrated 100 years of providing hope and opportunity to young people across the country.
