Character and Leadership Development

Our Character and Leadership Program is set up to teach community trusteeship and to empower our youth to use their influence to help shape our community in a positive manner.  Through their community service projects, our kids develop meaningful relationships with others, develop a positive self image, and work towards worthwhile projects to better our community.  These programs and projects help our Club members develop needed skills in leadership, teamwork, planning, and decision making.  They also learn to take pride in their work and a sense of accomplishment from their activities. Our activities are open to all Club members.

Some of our Character and Leadership Development activities include:

Volunteering.  Several members of the Boys & Girls Club volunteered to help change the lights for the annual Speedway in Lights event that is held each year at the Bristol Motor Speedway.  This event raises money for East Tennessee Charities and is a project of Speedway Childrens Charities.

Youth of the Month: Our program allows the staff to recognize an outstanding Club member each month of the year for their achievements.  This award is given to at least one boy and one girl based on Club attendance, participation, attitude, and community service

Boys & Girls Club Visits During Grandparents' Day:  Grandparents Day was on Sunday, September 10th and several of our clubs celebrated this special day with both Wellington Place and Greeneveille Rehab. Our kids went to Wellington Place on Friday, September 8th to play an afternoon game of bingo and to enjoy cheesecake with the residents and then we continued celebrating this day with Greeneville Rehab on Monday, September 11th.  The children enjoyed spending the afternoon with these special individuals and treating them to a special treat.

Make A Difference Day - Boys & Girls Club Kids Visiting With SeniorsMake A Difference Day - Boys & Girls Club Kids Visiting With Seniors:  On Friday, October 27th, the Boys & Girls Club celebrated Make a Difference Day with some of the residents from Wellington Place Assisted Living Center.  Make a Difference Day is the most encompassing national day of helping others, a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors.  Our youth enjoyed the special day by playing several games of bingo and enjoyed cookies and puch with the residents.

Summer Program Awards: We also give out awardsfor best overall campers, SMART MOVES, community service projects, and other special awards to the many campers we have in the summer.

Youth of the Year: Our annual program is designed to promote and recognize service to the Club and community academic performance, school events involvement, contributions to family, and spiritual life.  We usually select a junior or senior and send them to the state level for the state Youth of the Year competition held in April each year.

Torch Club: Our small group leadership group is for Club members between the ages of 10-13 years old.  Torch Club members elect officers and plan activities for outreach in the Club and the community.

Community Service Projects:
This is for boys and girls of all ages, conducted year around to teach our youth the importance of giving back to the community. Our many projects included clean-ups, food drives, coat drives, and grandparent events, along with others.

Presidential Pick-Up: Club members participate in a litter pick up that includes all of Greeneville's historic downtown area. We clean up several historic sites and the old Harmony Cemetery during the year.

National Clean Boating Campaign TVA: We work with the TVA Cherokee Douglas Watershed team to clean up the Nolichuckey River along Kinser Park.  Our kids collect bags of trash from along the river bed at the park.

Housing Authority Clean–Up Project: We pick up litter, rake leaves, and take away brush from the Housing Authority complex that is located across the street from our Club.  This out reach is a way for some of our kids to participate in a project where they live.

Join Hands Day: We collaborated with our local 4-H Club at our local town Food Bank.  We clean up the parking lot, cut down limbs, haul off garbage, clean up the food storage area, and paint the rails, all as a spring cleaning project.

Arbor Day Celebration: This community event was held at our Club with the local Keep America Beautiful affiliates to honor this day.  We plant a tree, have art and poems about trees, and our kids do the entire program.

Embarq Coat Drive: Embarq sponsors this event where we collect coats at our Club to be distributed in the fall to those that cannot afford to buy new coats.  The coats are cleaned free of charge and then given away.  More than four hundred coats find a new home each year.

Grandparents Day: We team up with our local Wal-Mart to offer fun and games to seniors on this special day.  Our kids serve food and provide activities and games for the seniors.

Foster Grandparents Appreciation Luncheon: This event is held each summer for the local Foster Grandparent Program. Our Club kids entertain and help serve food to the seniors.

Christmas Parade: Our kids help with the Keep America Beautiful affiliate's float for the parade. The kids help pass out trash bags from the KAB truck to help make this a “Litter Free” event.  In the past, we have also carried signs for the United Way in the parade, as well as, aided with other organizations.
