March 2 - Read Across America Day

Read Across America Day:  On Friday March 2nd, we celebrated Dr. Seuss’s Birthday with Read Across America Day activities.  Cathy Osborne and Club volunteers spent the day at Mosheim Elementary School dressed up as The Grinch and The Cat in the Hat and reading stories to several different classes. That afternoon, two of the part time staff dressed up as the same characters and read Dr. Seuss’s books to our younger kids.  All Club members enjoyed an afternoon snack of green eggs and ham for the day.  Our staff lead reading to the kids in the classroom area and we provide many games and activities.

Power Hour:  Making Minutes Count
A comprehensive homework help and tutoring program,

POWER HOUR is designed to raise the academic proficiency of
Club members ages 6 to12.

Power Hour: This is our daily program that is located in our Club library for
our youth to do their homework and have help with tutoring from staff, local
high school students, and college volunteers during the school year.

Technology Lab: Our Computer lab has high speed internet and many programs to enable our club kids to do homework projects,
do digital art projects and safely surf the net.

Wal-Mart Job Shadowing: We take students to our local Wal-Mart and to the Wal-Mart Distribution Center to
job shadow in our outreach partnership.  The kids do job shadowing with retail sales clerks up to management positions.

Field Trips: Our Program Director also works hard to set up educational field trips for our kids at the Club.
We have visited Rainforest Adventures, Ripley’s Aquarium, the Knoxville Zoo, the Gem Mine, local historical attractions,
and the Hands on Museum as part of our education outreach.
