Chaz Story

Boys & Girls Club

Youth of the Year

Chaz Story has been named the 2010 Youth of the Year for the Boys and Girls Club of Greeneville and Greene County. The national Youth of the Year program recognizes superior leadership skills, academic achievement, obstacles overcome and outstanding service to Boys & Girls Clubs and the community.  Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys and Girls Club member can receive. As a senior at Greeneville High School, Chaz exercises outstanding character in his school, community and on the fields of athletic competition.

This spring Chaz traveled with several staff, a board member and his brother Phelan Story to Nashville, Tennessee to compete in the state level of the Youth of the Year competition.  Statewide finalists are chosen from more than 30,000 club members in Tennessee, according to Scott Bullington, executive director of the local club. While at the state contest, Chaz was awarded a $250 scholarship from CMT in addition to the $1,000 scholarship he was given for being the local Youth of the Year. Youth of the Year encourages Club members to reach their full potential by achieving academic success, leading healthy lifestyles and contributing to their communities. “Chaz is a dedicated volunteer,” said Cathy Osborne, the club’s program director. “He always makes time to help out at the Boys & Girls Club with our many activities.” Youth of the Year honorees are shining examples and living proof that GREAT futures start at the Boys and Girls Club.

Boys & Girls Club of Greeneville & Greene County Building Project

American Greetings Donates 19.4 Acres to the Boys & Girls Club

The Boys & Girls Club of Greeneville & Greene County has accepted a donation of 19.4 acres and three large buildings from American Greetings Corporation. The property at Bohannon Avenue, which is officially appraised at approximately $3.4 million, will be the site of an expanded Boys & Girls Club facility. The Boys & Girls Club plans to move its operations from its current facility at 740 West Church Street as soon as the donated property has  been renovated and prepared for use by the end of this year.  “American Greetings certainly has been a good neighbor to our community, providing job opportunities and community support to Greeneville and Greene County for many years,” stated Scott Bullington, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Greeneville & Greene County.  “This donation to the Boys & Girls Club just continues the good work that American Greetings has been known for to all in our community.” “I want to thank American Greetings once again for this most generous gift and for providing the starting point for our vision to serve more children and to provide a place for great futures to start here in Greeneville.” Bullington added.  In a brief statement this morning, Scott Crawford, the local plant manager, said, on behalf of American Greetings, “We’re excited about what they’re going to be able to do with this facility for the boys and girls of our community.”

The donation will give the club the opportunity to plan for at least the next 50 years, The buildings on the site will provide spacious, highly functional, and safe areas for the club’s members and their families.“We have needed a larger facility for some time, and this property will enable us to have a first-class facility, with outdoor recreational opportunities,” Bullington stated. “I can promise you that we will have a first-class, quality facility that will be a source of pride for this community for years to come,” he added.  In addition to its direct benefits to young people and their families, such a community resource should prove to be a helpful tool for industrial recruitment.  The additional space also will allow the club to increase the number of young people who can be served. The property and building donation will allow the club to reach children that they are not able to serve   at this time due to space limitations at our current location.

The 19.4 acres includes three buildings that total 356,350 square-feet of space.  The club likely will demolish the oldest of the buildings — a warehouse-style, wood-and-metal structure of 102,400 square-feet. The club plans to salvage flooring and other materials from the building to sell for proceeds to partially cover the cost of the demolition.  That building sits on a concrete pad that will be converted into parking spaces for the club.    Preliminary plans also include partial demolition of one of the other two buildings. The building with the most potential for renovation, he said, is a metal warehouse of 150,000 square-feet.

This building has high ceilings which are ideal for development of gymnasium space and other indoor sports  opportunities. The expanded Boys & Girls Club at the new site will include two full size basketball courts and two separate program areas — one for teens, and one for pre-teens and younger children.  More details will be released as the site plans develop later this spring.

All are critical in exerting positive impact on the life of a child:

1. Dedicated Youth Facility The Club is a place designed solely for youth programs and activities.

2. Open Daily  The Club is open every day, after school and in the summer, when kids have free time and need positive, productive outlets.
3. Professional Staff Every Club has trained youth development professionals, providing positive role models and mentors. Volunteers provide key supplementary support.
4. Available & Affordable to All Youth  Clubs reach out to kids who cannot afford, or may lack access to, other community programs.  Dues are low, averaging $5 per school year.
