Former Tennessee Vol's Great, Mike Jackson to Speak at
Boys & Girls Club’s One Campaign Luncheon
Mike Jackson during his playing days at the University of Tennessee where he was an ALL SEC preformer
The Boys & Girls Club of Greeneville & Greene County will kick off its annual One Campaign with a luncheon on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at Trinity United Methodist Church starting at 11:45 am. This year’s featured speaker will be Mike Jackson former University of Tennessee basketball player. Jackson played with the famed “Ernie & Bernie Show” (Ernie Grunfeld and Bernard King ) at the University of Tennessee. Despite playing with two All- Americans, Jackson received All-SEC honors and was a co-captain of the team along with Grundfeld his senior year. Anyone that entered into the Stokley Athletic center to see a basketball game back then knew what a competitor Jackson was on the court. He was drafted by the Buffalo Braves (now the Los Angeles Clippers) in the 1977 NBA draft and later played professionally overseas.
Jackson will speak on the influence adults have on youth, including his own personal experiences and how they prepared him for success as a college student and basketball player at the University of Tennessee and beyond. The public is invited to attend this event, but reservations are required. The event is part of the organization’s One Campaign festivities that will raise funds for the Clubs’ after-school programs and services for youth living in our community. Scheduled to run through the spring, the campaign seeks donations primarily from individuals.
Serving as the campaign’s chair this year are Randy Tilson and Paige Metcalf. The campaign’s goal for this year is to raise $ 40,000 for the Clubs’ annual operating budget. Tilson added “We are proud to announce that to date our campaign has raised just over $ 10,000 as a result of some early gifts from our board members and staff. All we need now is the rest of our community to show their support and we will be able to reach, maybe even exceed our goal.” “Our club is making a difference in the community.” Tilson added.
“Last year, the local Boys & Girls Club served 1,892 youth throughout Greeneville & Greene County, but there are still many more children in our community that need the kind of positive influence and guidance the Boys & Girls Club provides, and we want to reach out to these youth and their families,” said Carla Bewley, the Boys & Girls Club Board President. Funds raised from the campaign will help provide quality after school programs such as the Power Hour homework help program, computer skills training, arts & crafts, fitness and character & leadership programs for the club. For more information on the One Campaign or luncheon contact Scott Bullington at the Boys & Girls Club at 787-9322.
The speaker
Mike Jackson, who came to the University of Tennessee from Nashville, is now finance director for Hansen Chrysler Jeep in his hometown. He and his wife, Rachel, live in Hermitage, with three daughters Siobhan, Jasmyn and Taylor. He is on the Board of Directors for Nashville Youth for Christ, a group actively involved in several schools in Nashville and involved with a program dealing with teenage moms as well.
Jackson said his life has been molded by several individuals that have taken the time to make a difference in his life and organizations like the Boys & Girls Club help to offer these same type of caring adults. Jackson stated that his stepfather helped to fuel his athletic dreams, then it was a high school coach (Charles Anderson) that took him under his wing and then Coach Ray Mears at Tennessee. He said he learned different life lessons from each of these men and they all played a part in making him the man he is today.
Why do we need a Boys & Girls Club?
The Boys & Girls Club’s mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. “The cost of providing the Boys & Girls Club experience to one child for a year is about $ 250.00” said Judge Ken Bailey. “You can see what a valuable investment that is when you compare it to the cost of incarcerating a youth who went in the wrong direction – usually $30-40,000 or more a year. The Boys & Girls Club gives a good return on investment.” Bailey added The Boys & Girls Club is a non-profit, privately-funded 501(c)(3) organization and depends on private donations, sponsorships and volunteers to accomplish its mission. To make a donation or to volunteer contact Scott Bullington, Cathy Byrd Osborne or Sangela Blue at the Boys & Girls Club office at 423-787-9322, stop by the club located at 740 West Church Street or visit the website at www.ggcbgc.orgfor more information on the Boys & Girls Club. The club is open from 9 am until 6:30 pm Monday to Friday.
