Tennessee Vols All American & National Champion And NFL Denver bronco All Pro
Al Wilson to speak at 10th Annual Boys & Girls Club Champions Dinner

The Boys & Girls Club of Greeneville and Greene County will hold their 10th Annual Champions Dinner on August 23, 2010 at First Baptist Church in Greeneville, Tennessee with former Tennessee Volunteer All American and team captain of the 1998 National Champions, Al Wilson as the keynote speaker. The event is a fundraiser for the organization that serves many children annually from throughout Greeneville & Greene County with a variety of after-school and summer programs, youth sports events and many community and school outreach programs. This year’s event is title sponsored by Forward Air & Laughlin Memorial Hospital.  The event will start with a reception at 6:00 pm to meet Al Wilson, Dinner at 6:30 pm with the evening’s program to follow.

Al Wilson was a linebackerof the University of Tennessee Volunteers and the Denver Broncos of the National Football League. Wilson played his entire eight-year career with the Broncos and was a five-time Pro Bowlselection. Neck and back injuries cut short his tenure with the Broncos and he  officially retired from football in 2008.

Wilson’s numbers speak for themselves, but it was his leadership that most Tennessee Volunteer fans remember. Wilson was the spiritual leader both on and off the field for the Volunteers during his career.  The heart and soul of the 1998 team, senior Al Wilson was a team captain and defensive stalwart at linebacker for the Vols. During the run to the national title, Wilson posted 77 tackles, four sacks and an interception despite missing three games due to injury.  His best game happened to come against the Florida Gators. He posted 12 tackles and forced a school-record three fumbles in the Vols 20-17 overtime win.  His collegiate career totals are 272 total tackles, 11 sacks, 27 tackles for loss and two interceptions. He was named All-SEC in 1997 and All-SEC and All-America in 1998. In his three seasons as a starter, the Vols posted a 34-4 overall record and captured two SEC titles. He is second on Tennessee's career tackles for loss list.  Wilson went on to play eight seasons in the NFL with the Denver Broncos after the organization drafted him with their first pick in the 1999 NFL Draft. He proved to be as great a player at the pro level as he was in college.  He started 119 of 125 games during his career in Denver and was selected to the Pro Bowl five times. He notched 560 career tackles and 21.5 sacks in the NFL before a back injury all but derailed his career.

The Champions Dinner has become known for its dynamic speakers which have included past speakers such as University of Tennessee coaches Pat Summitt, Bruce Pearl, Phil Fulmer, Ray Mears, Johnny Majors, NFL Hall of Famer Mike Singletary and Atlanta Brave Great Dale Murphy.  “This year promises to be no different, with Al Wilson as our guest speaker” stated Scott Bullington, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club.  “Al Wilson is an inspiring speaker who has had a number of sports and personal experiences that have made him the champion he is today”.  He added.  This year’s Boys & Girls Club Champions Dinners is title sponsored by Forward Air and Laughlin Memorial Hospital.  The speaker is sponsored by C & C Millwright Maintenance and RPC/ProCote.  The dinner for the event is sponsored by DTR Tennessee. Boys & Girls Club Renovation and addition to start in 2010!

Boys & Girls Club of Greeneville & Greene County Building Project

The renovation and addition project for the Boys & Girls Club of Greeneville & Greene County was approved for final reading on June 9, 2009 at the planning commission.  The organization is waiting on the final approval from the state fire marshal and if all goes as planned, we are set to start construction sometime in the fall of  2010.  Construction is expected to take 8-10 months for completion.  Complete renovation of the existing facility that will include adding central heat and air, a sprinkler system, new windows and doors along with new plumbing and electrical wiring throughout the entire building.  Some walls will be taken down to make existing rooms bigger and some rooms will be converted into new uses.  One example is the current gym becoming a game room on one side and a cafeteria on the other side.  The addition will include 10 new program area rooms, new office and storage space along with additional new bathroom areas throughout the building.  The organization will also build a new full size gymnasium with 6 drop down goals and bleachers for spectators.  This renovation will allow the Boys & Girls Club to more than double the amount of children that they can serve each day and allow the club to serve them more efficiently. This past year the club had 424 registered club members and served 1,903 children throughout the community with their school outreach programs, jr. sports events and community wide programs.   The project will take the existing facility that is approximately 10,000 sq ft and increase it to approximately 24,000 sq ft.
The Boys & Girls Club has announced that they will have an open house soon for tours of the current facility and to have plans available showing the changes that will take place to the facility for review for the general public.  More information on the club’s building project will be forthcoming in a release from the club in the spring of 2010.
